Paper to Cut

The “Paper to Cut”exhibition invites us to leave behind the narratives of the materiality of the paper and its potential adventures from the world of everyday life in the field of art. Its introspective tangible presence as an element of our cultural material and the icons that it creates are the starting point for the artistic practice of the exhibition’s art. The perceptual action is expressed by unexpected manipulations of the material, composing interactive fields of research, reasoning and visual wandering. Paper worlds painted, cut and welded or drilled are directed to the imaginary and claim to return to the very things, of this world the expressive, inexhaustible and the transcendent.

Zefi Athanasopoulou is a multifaceted artist with papers (Paper art), sculpture and digital art. In recent years, poetry has plaed a key role in its artistic expression with paper material. Sometimes torn, sometimes accurately cut or folded, paper, inexpensive or expensive, being a very diverse and flexible medium, becomes a visual alphabet with which to compose visual poems. In its research, the evolving series of “Mysterious Mechanisms” is a special place: three-dimensional composite geometry of a three-dimensional geometry, integrated in the shape of a circle.

Ismene Bonatsou has experience from her place of origin, Cephalonia. While growing up in Athens, the summer months by the sea have been enormously imprinted in her childhood memory. On the water, swimming or floating on its surface besides small and large boats, with the sense of absolute freedom that a world without gravity offers, a magical, marvelous, eternal world. This very feeling is attributed to a lightweight material like paper, white and sensitive to childhood dreams.

Very early, Annetta Spanoudaki, inspired by Japan and China, was fascinated by the paper. Such a sensitive and at the same time so dynamic material. Each artist has a special physical and psychological connection to the material he uses. Few materials have the potential for multiple metamorphoses both in form and in their structure, and can be so easily and plump when they work. Handmade paper is a meditation exercise that makes the final work very direct and intuitive. Something more than just a simple aesthetic object.

A white paper on a black paper, light and dark, matter and dark matter, the known world and the unknown. In Aris Stoidis’ work, paper is not merely a vector of an image, it becomes an image, in a world where the front and the back are important, and the surface at one moment is an obstacle, in another a horizon, in the other earth. It is sometimes born of nothing, a dream that carries out, or rests in a branch, and another man is born-cut off by a white, uninhabited “earth”, and looking to discover the unknown, the metaphysical, the other that balances -Fills the world around and inside.
