ahh, ¿ fairy-tales

Annetta Spanoudaki

The series of works entitled ahh, ¿ fairy-tales is part of a series on the theme of landscape as memory recall.

Annetta Spanoudaki’s images are born as mental constructions when the artist stops looking.

She is interested in the concept of time and space as ephemeral. For this, she chooses paper, a fragile and perishable material. At first glance, her images seem innocent; however, they contain much of the atmosphere of E. A. Poe’s short stories and irony of O. Wilde’s fairy tales. The sense of waiting, something undefined, a destabilization are elements that characterize them. At the same time, she renegotiates with symbolism and metaphor. The viewer has to look for what is being implied.

In this, particular series, paper and the paper cut technique are the protagonists.

Her tools are a mix of fragile and hard, light and shadow. The empty space created together with the claustrophobic atmosphere compose her fiction around the earthly landscape with its fluidity and uncertainty.
