Pyxis III

Ilias Christopoulos

Kalamata, Greece

The box (Pyxis) is made with the technique “Raku” a special ceramic firing technique that began in Japan in 1573. The word Raku comes from the Japanese ideogram meaning “happiness”, “joy”, “pleasure”. According to the technique, the ceramic, after having undergone a special glazing for “Raku” with metal oxides, accepts large temperature changes (thermal shock), with often unpredictable consequences for the ceramic.

This process is very spectacular, it creates unique metallic colors and the well-known cracking on the surface of ceramics.
